Chain lifter

As we have seen before, the roller coaster train itself has no motor: for most of its operation, the train moves by gravity and momentum. In order to accumulate potential energy, the train needs to be lifted to the top of the first hillside or launched with great thrust.

The traditional lifting device is a long chain (or multiple chains), just like the chain of a bicycle, but much larger. It is installed under the track and extends upward along the uplift slope. The chain is fixed in a loop with a drive at the top and bottom of the track. The drive at the bottom of the track is driven by an electric motor.

By turning the chain loop, it moves continuously to the top of the track like a long conveyor belt. The roller coaster jammed the chain with a few chain springs and a strong hinge hook. When the train goes to the bottom of the hillside, the lock spring will jam the chain link. Once the chain spring is caught, the chain will pull the train to the top of the mountain. At the highest point, the lock spring is released and the train begins to move down the hillside. The rattling sound you hear from the chain is actually the sound from the anti slide device, so as to prevent the train from sliding back to the station when the motor fails.

Catapult

In some newer roller coaster designs, trains are launched by catapults. There are several ways to launch a catapult, but their functions are basically the same. These systems do not drag the train up the hillside to accumulate potential energy, but make the train get a lot of kinetic energy in a very short time to start running.

Linear induction motor is one of the common catapult systems. Linear induction motor uses electromagnets to create a magnetic field above the track and below the train, and makes the two magnetic fields attract each other. The electric motor moves the magnetic field above the track and pulls the train behind to move along the track at a very high speed. The main advantages of this system lie in its speed, efficiency, durability, accuracy and controllability.

Hydraulic launching system appears in the roller coaster made by Intemet. This is a slider with a steel cable, driven by a hydraulic flywheel. When launching, the slide block is stuck under the train, and the high-speed flywheel quickly pulls the slide block to rush out with the train.

At the end of the launch section, the slider is decoupled from the train, and the train will run up to a height of about 100 meters depending on the kinetic energy.

Friction wheel

The roller coaster uses dozens of spinning wheels to push the train up the ascent. The wheels are arranged in two adjacent rows along the track. They hold the bottom (or top) of the train in the middle and push the train forward. It is often used when the climbing belt turns (because the chain cannot turn laterally on the horizontal plane) or to adjust the speed of the train to be equal to the speed of the chain before the chain elevator. The giant giant roller coaster at Orlando Universal Studios uses these wheels to speed up the tunnel.
